Hazelwood Announcements for Friday, January 18, 2019

Today’s events:
• No Bridge to Success after school today
• PTO sponsored Spirit Day – 100th day of school!
• PTO grade success recognition during lunch periods
• Student/Staff of the Month nominations due today to Mrs. Kiesler, Mrs. Farnsley, or Mrs. Case
• Academic Team signups are due today to Mrs. Kiesler

• Dr. Waters received more positive feedback about our awesome 8th graders! The message reads: I wanted to say thank you for allowing us to bring our Cadets to Hazelwood Wednesday for the 8th grade Military/JROTC presentation. The students were the most well behaved group of 8th graders that I have seen in my 12 years of doing presentations. I was so impressed with them that I have told everyone I’ve come into contact with. Thought you would like to hear how well they behaved and ask you pass this along to them. Thanks again. Master Gunny Akermon. Way to go, 8th graders! You continue to make Hazelwood proud!

• Any student interested in Swimming must have a physical by the first practice Tuesday, January 22 from 4-5:30. If you were unable to attend the meeting during core+ Monday, please see Coach Johnson in room 261 to pick up information.

• Our next PTO school dance will be a Hearts and Heroes dance on Friday, February 1st in the gym. It will be a father and daughter and a mother and son or other important adult in your life dance. It’s an opportunity for you to spend time with someone special in your life AND hang out with your friends at a school dance. (In order to attend this dance, you must have an adult who attends with you.) Tickets will be sold ahead of time for $5 each. Your ticket purchase will include a snack and punch. We will also have a professional photographer to take pictures for $10 each. Flyers will be going home in your 7th period class and need to be turned in to Mrs. Duff in the office with your money. • Students, Dr. Waters received some positive feedback about our 8th grade boys’ basketball team! An 8th grade parent from another middle school called to tell us that our boys played with such good sportsmanship that our team was her son’s favorite team to play against this season! Because this player had such a positive response to our team, so did his mother! Way to go, team! Hazelwood is so proud of you!

• New Albany High School is hosting its annual 8th grade parent night Wednesday January 16 at 6:00pm in the NAHS auditorium. This is a chance for you to hear about programs and classes at New Albany High School, as well as meet several staff members, Please enter through door # 2 ( auditorium door). Doors will open at 5:45pm. Please bring your 2017 tax information and know your child’s social security number because there will be NAHS staff members available to assist you in signing up your child for the 21st Century Scholars Program.

This is the chance for you and your friends to get on stage and have fun at our 2nd Annual Blue Carpet Talent Show on January 24th at 6:30. Hey – you even get a trophy! Entry forms and all information are on the ledge outside of the office. Talent show deadline is today, Friday, January 11th! The entry fee has been waived – it’s FREE to sign up! Hurry up and get those entries in!

• 8th grade Parents: New Albany High School is hosting its annual 8th grade parent night Wednesday January 16 at 6:00pm in the NAHS auditorium. • New Albany High School is hosting a cheerleading clinic this Saturday, January 5th from 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the NAHS auxiliary gym. This is for grades Kindergarten through 8th grade, and no experience is required. The cost is $30 per person if you pre-register, or $40 at the door (students who register at the door are not guaranteed to get a t-shirt!). All participants will get to perform during halftime at two basketball games! Flyers are on the ledge outside of the office.

The 8th grade lost a hard fought game 20-29. They were led by Journey Howard with 12 points and 7 rebounds and Bobbie Calvin chipped in 6 points and 8 rebounds. They are not in action again until January 7 at home vs. Clarksville Middle school.

• The 5th graders are doing a great job on the Acts of Kindness Challenge! So far Mrs. Offutt’s class is in the lead with 78 AOK’s. Mrs. McAfee’s class is in 2nd place with 61 AOK’s and Mrs. Vierling’s class is 3rd with 52 AOK’s. • It’s that time of year again – the annual faculty/staff volleyball game is right around the corner! The game will take place on Tuesday, November 20 at the end of the day. Tickets are $1, and can be purchased in the morning or during lunch starting on Monday, November 5. The 8th grade girls’ volleyball team will take on the female teachers, and the 8th grade football team will try to defeat the male teachers. There will be fun and exciting games between the matches – don’t miss out on the fun!

• As we kick off Red Ribbon Week I wanted to share this fact with you. Did you know that research shows a connection between marijuana use, depression, and psychosis? Weekly use of marijuana DOUBLES a teen’s risk of depression and anxiety. Thank you to those that participated to day in PJ day and putting drugs to rest. Join us tomorrow by showing drugs we are too classy for them by wearing your best formal wear!

• The girls soccer team ended their season just before fall break with a 3 to 1 loss to the eventual southern Indiana champion Highland Hills. After the game, the Highland Hills coach stated that “You guys have incredible speed and were the hardest team we played all season.” Part of that speed was attributed to Lily Allen and Mary Alstott, defensive specialists, and Kenzie Kahl and Lexi Daffron on offense. Olivia Stephens only gave up 3 goals in over 270 total minutes in goal this season. All will be returning starters next season.

• Over fall break, one of our music teachers, Mrs. Thomas, accepted the challenge of the Louisville Ironman Race. This race consisted of a 2.4 mile swim in the Ohio River, cycling for 112 miles, and then running for 26.2 miles. This was a total of 140.6 miles! Mrs. Thomas began the swim at 9:01 a.m. and finished the marathon distance run at 10:08 p.m. Her official time for the entire course was 13 hours and 7 minutes. Not many complete the entire race, but Mrs. Thomas did! Congratulations to Mrs. Thomas for this great accomplishment, and your Hazelwood family is very proud of you!

• This Thursday, September 27th, is Hazelwood day at Sweet Frog! Go to the New Albany Sweet Frog and tell them you’re there for Hazelwood. Enjoy some yummy frozen yogurt and support our PTO at the same time!

• Anyone who is going on the Washington, D.C. trip who is interested in laying the wreath at Arlington should write a letter or see Mrs. Pielemeier as soon as possible!

• Lifetouch will be here today after school to take sports photos!

• Pictures for the boy’s tennis team will be after school today at 3:55. Please meet coach Briscoe in the gym, after school. Also, the Clark/Floyd Tournament has been rescheduled to Thursday. All players participating in the tournament need to meet Coach Briscoe after school on Thursday.

• Cross country will have their end of the year party today after school. Runners please meet in Mr. Robinson’s room after school. At 4:45 the team will take their pictures in the gym, so please bring your uniform. After pictures are done, please turn your uniform into Coach Robinson in the gym. The party is over at 5:15. Please have a ride home ready at that time.

• On September 28th, we will be hosting Hazelwood’s first ever dance off! You’ll be showing us your best moves to some of the coolest dances like the floss, keke challenge, and orange justice. It will be 40 bark bones to participate, and winners will receive prizes! If you are participating, you must let your core plus teacher know by September 25th. If you just want to come and watch, it is 25 bark bones to enter. See you on the 28th, and be sure to practice your dance moves!

• 5th/6th grade girls’ basketball tryouts will be Tuesday 10/16, Wednesday 10/17, Thursday 10/18, and Friday 10/19 after school until 6:00. You must have an IHSAA physical on file to tryout. You can pick up a physical form from the office. You must be academically eligible to make the team. (See handbook for requirements.) You must attend all days of tryouts. A first round of cuts may be made after the tryout on Wednesday. Final rosters will be made at end of tryouts on Friday. For those who make the team practice will start on Monday 10/22. All tryouts will be closed and not open to the public or parents.

Each team member contributed all night. Players are: Kylie Mumaw, Avery Kiesler, Kira Schmidt, Aleyah Ford, Cheyenne Farr, Vanessa Sullivan, Taryn hunter, Izzy Fenwick, Alexis sans and, Even though she is hurt, Cheyenne Farnsley. Coach Cox is very proud of them!

• The cross country team ran at East Washington yesterday. The following runners received awards…. Ja’Quan Jones, Kaitylynn VanWinkle, Kyliegh Burke, Lila Endres, Alex Needy, Preston Wint, George Mullins, Nisa Abell and Sage Fleenor. Practice is today after school at Hazelwood from 4-5pm

• Despite great effort from the entire team, our lady bullpups soccer team came up short against a powerful Providence squad 1-0. The lone goal was scored on a penalty kick late in the game. Even with the loss, the girls had a winning season and are in the playoffs! They will play Scottsburg on Friday night at 6 p.m. on the Silver Street field. These two teams tied to start the season, so the bullpups need great fan support to help them beat the Warriors this time. Come out and cheer them on to victory!
• Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) would like to invite all Hazelwood students to join them every Tuesday morning in Mrs. Endres’ room from 8:30-8:52 for a student led devotional and prayer. It will be a great way to start your day!

Kenzie Kahl got the start at left midfield and Trista Meade put in valuable minutes off the bench. The ladies face a tough task at Silver Creek on Monday!

• Hazelwood Cross Country ran at North Harrison last night. Lila Endres came in 38th and Taryn Hunter came in 48th. For the boys, J’Quan Jones came in 56th and George Mullins came in 88th.

• The 7/8 grade boys soccer team was in action last night at North Harrison and came out with an impressive win over the hosting cougars. The Bullpups posted a clean sheet lead by goalkeeper Will Ellenbrand and strong central defense by Nathaniel Martinez. Wesley Omerso came in late and was able to keep the cougars from scoring in the second half. Bullpup goals were scored by Larry Fanning, Kurt Geron, Jaedon Lopez, and a hat trick from Finn Railey. Don’t miss the 5/6 and 7/8 boys Bullpup soccer teams in action Monday night at Highland Hills!

• Hazelwood football has started! Practice is every day, Monday through Friday, from 4-6 p.m. on the practice field across from the school. You must have a physical on file to play.

• Cross country practice is today after school at Hazelwood. Practice will run from 4:00 – 5:15 p.m. You must have a physical on file before you come to practice. If you have any questions, please see Mr. Robinson in the gym or room 278.

• 5th/6th graders: Football has started for the New Albany Youth Football League! Signups and practices are every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the practice field across from the high school. Flyers with more information are on the ledge outside the office.
